Facts About The Kiwi bird Habitat-For Kids
91My habitat Is The Forest ..Kiwi Birds Like To Eat..
I Am The Kiwi Bird Of New Zealand
The Flightless Kiwi Bird is native to New Zealand endearing to New Zealanders ,and also high on the International Endangered List .
New Zealand people are affectionately called Kiwis and the nickname has appeared in several ways>> World War History of Kiwi (people)
How Old Am I ? Thousands of years old ,
Since the introduction of stoats , weasel and ferrets who became my predators, by early English settlers, their survival has been threatened , and many conservationists put alot of work into breeding and environmental protection to secure the survival of remaining Kiwi -birds( more on this later)
Yes I am the flightless Kiwi Bird and native, to New Zealand ,and I was here to greet the first people also native to New Zealand , The Maori, who liked me a lot ,a little too much in fact, and if I was unfortunate to be captured by them I was of course -dinner. They also made use of my feathers making various garments to keep warm in the colder months.
The Maori were great hunters and gatherers and respected wildlife as well. My feathers have lined the shoulders of many great chiefs and even today those same garments are sacred and treasured items. In New Zealand and some museum's in bigger lands. ( see that pictures displayed,) those are my feathers woven so finely into that garment.)
How Did I Get My Name Kiwi Bird?
The Maori also heard us calling to each other as we fed on insects and berries, and looked for mates at in the forest , it sounded like we were saying ..keeee weee weee weee, ( hear us on video) and so they named us the Kiwi
I Am The New Zealand Flightless Kiwi
If Im A Flightless Kiwi ,How Do I find food?
That's right , I am flightless cant fly , never flew , not even to the letterbox and back , mind you I dreamed I did once when this nasty wee stoat stole my babies!
I also love to sleep during the day ( nocturnal) because the night has all the action baby ,and best take-aways on offer like triple stacker worms , bacon flavoured beetles , slater sandwich with the new curly fern roots on the side. Some of my northern bro's have other specialities but I wouldn't believe all that you hear ,they are known to hype it up a bit up that way!
Seriously my beak is long ,about 1/3 of my body length, so I feed deep and off some solid territory in that vast forest floor.
Did you also notice from my pic that my species has no tail no, groovy huh, there are a couple of other quirky things about me that make me just the wee bit unique in the bird world too.
The experts ( bird people and conservationists) praise them to the hilt man , geeze I probably would have died out by now if it had not been for their intelligence and care , no make that ,would have died out.
Ancestors , boy we all have 'em don't we? , well the facts recorded show we didn't have any predators way back maybe thousands of years ago, lets just say many many moons ago, so all they did was hang in the crib which was literally a huge habitat of rain forest ,they had no need to adapt too much, because you see , New Zealand is a long long way from a lot of other lands and surrounded by ocean , so unless it can swim ( then walk on land) Kiwi birds had it sweet man!
Sadly the story is different now ,along with the introduced predators came dogs and cats and then sometimes careless humans , but those caring ,dedicated D.O.C. ( Dept. Of Conservation) work their butts off making it more Eco friendly for us and slowly we have begun breeding again.
Kiwi Birds Are Nocturnal
Here I am singing for my supper...(1.20)..kiwiiiiii...

Fact Is Im Pretty Special Kiwi Bird
So by now you definitely understand I am flightless, but did you also know I am really a very shy bird, but if you do spot me some night ,when I'm out and about foraging on the New Zealand forest floor its probably because I didn't see you , my eye-sights not the best ,although if the winds blowing my way I certainly will detect you with my super sensitive nostrils.
About the size of a chicken ,though much more handsome ,we are shall we say a little more plump, which also helps us stay warm as it gets quite cool ,deep in the forests and thick undergrowth. Females eggs are as large as some ostrich eggs which is unusual since we are overall not a large bird. Don't frighten me and keep your dog on a leash if you want to introduce yourself . I will be one of these breeds.
You may also find me at the zoo , some of us stay in special Kiwi Habitats,so the big people can learn more , and the special lighting means you can see me too. Come visit me on your next holiday.!

Fantastic, you know it kinda reminds me of a feather covered balloon with a beak and legs.. really looks like a sweet bird! Glad someone is trying to intervene before it's too late!
Its always nice to learn something new.
What a cute little hub (I almost called it a lens.. ha ha)! I don't spend nearly the time I should here at hubpages but I do keep an eye out for my fellow Squids and their updates! Is that why your name is Kiwi? This bird? What a special person you are!! All thumbs up!!!
Those boys were hunters and gatherers eh? I know kiwi was good Kai.. but hey they were harder on the Mowers weren't they as hunters and collectors! Even to this day they don't care whether the prey is 2 or 4 stroke! & Thanks yep I joined jerrico's clan..xlnt. Good hub there iwik.
Oh, do publish your shopping list! That would make a great hub!

Kia Kaha Kia Manawa
I think you might get a lot of search engine traffic on this because many kids are always trying to find information on the kiwibird, which is not always easy to find at the libraries here. There are a few pages in bird books, but we do not hear lots about this creature.
Matahari here lol.
I just had to tell you cold here but, its producing some yummo food incl. Hangis, Kumara Potatoe Pumpkin, onions pork beef chicken, and vege to round off steamed pudding, and all for Charity..
Have a cool day and pretend you haven't seen me.. This is way more fun than Forums.
Ah Badgirl, Kia ora, I spotted you! hey EK, never met a shy kiwi before, they must definitely be endangered. Might go and buy myself some puha and kumara today, maybe throw a sausage on the sizzle hahahaha
These are amazing birds, and there's very little photos of them on the web surprisingly (or maybe not surprisingly since their nocturnal). Nice work!
thanks for share with us about this bird.
I actually saw one in the wild during the day while tramping (hiking for the non-NZers) on Stewart Island - they aren't nocturnal there - it was big one just in the middle of the track at about 10am - she stayed for about 10 minutes at all not scared at all - it was an awesome experience.
I will keep a close eye on this hub for any signs of dangerous Kiwi activities.
ha! I would cause severe indigestion for any long beaks!
I'm cringing some of my ancestors eat frogs, er the ones in Guernsey still do, I confess I ate a frog leg once not knowing, I hope Toady doesn't think I am a cannabil. , he is a hard case that one, I remember him with an old grey beard.
People think I have a problem now, honestly what is the psyche of these guys, we are so diff from them, and I had never realised it. We are so much more laid back.
Now he is a little kid. he has overdone the botox, No one can say his avator is stale....... Also I must be the only banned Hubber to have a Hub written about them Wicked. Have a nice night.
lissie has said weird, ds has said mentally unhinged providing a link to my squidoo site, which is mainly about selling my art. pete has started the ball rolling. I just loved being the meanest person on Hubpages. Where do they get that.
I wonder is there a virtual medal for that achievement. hahahahahahaha
Badgirl, don't let them get to you!

im so angry because i've spent about 3 hours researching on kiwi birds, and never found a web as good as this one! I mean, AFTER 3 HOURS I click a random page and here i am! Thank you soooooooo very much!!!! :D
Yes they are. Is it illegal in some parts of new Zealand to sell/ make cloaks out of Kiwi bird feathers? Because I'm writing a paper about Kiwi Birds, and I really need to know if the endangerment of kiwi birds cause cultural or economical issues. i hope you'll have a reply for this. Thanks!
Thank you sooooo much again! You shold probably write a book about kiwis. I bet you'd do great! Thanks again!
Thank you so much for making this hub so amazing. You should do more work on them and will love to have more such stocks. Do preserve them.
I had a project to do on kiwis. Your information helped(A LOT!)
Thanks for the very stimualting hub and yes, I did check out the research on the blackbird. It's very revealing what songs can tell us about the history of ourselves.
Happy New Year, Chuck!
I thought that the kiwi birds were extinct. Hmm... I guess that they aren't AWESOME! I only hope that they can make a comeback like bald eagles did. A great hub about kiwi birds, it certainly opened my eyes.
Nice hub! I love kiwi, and love how ingrained they are in the NZ culture.
